First off, I’d like to apologize for my extended hiatus! This summer was a veritable whirlwind of touring, rehearsals, photo shoots, and a host of other music related fun. There is so much catching up to do! Today, I will start with a project that has been in the works for some time. An album that I played on has finally been released after much work and a few unfortunate roadblocks (i.e. hard drive devastation). I am happy to say that is has been worth the wait, as it turned out better than I could ever have imagined. Mark Bezanson has been a friend of mine for some time and we have always had a mutual respect for each other’s work in various musical outfits, but never had too many chances to play together. I was delighted when he asked me to be a part of his debut album. I am extremely proud of Mark and what he has accomplished on his first record. We have a release show this weekend at one of the finest places to play in the Maritimes – The Wick Pub in Berwick.

Below is a cut from Half Lies Half Truths entitled ‘Stumbling’. I love this tune because it has a certain Al Green/R&B vibe and a huge pocket. Caleb Miles, who lends his considerable guitar skills to it, also did an amazing job on the production. If you can’t make it to The Wick this Saturday, (Oct.26, 2013) I sincerely hope you check out the CD. The album is loaded with great tunes and fantastic musicians – and the drum tracks aren’t half bad either!

Last week I completed nine drum tracks for blues rocker Dan Doiron’s upcoming release. The tracks were recorded at Don Chapman’s DC Productions in Dartmouth over two days. Even though there was a great deal of hard work involved, it was a very relaxed and productive session thanks to Don and Dan’s expertise and laid back approach. Also, a big shout out to Los Cabos drumsticks is in order! A drummer friend of mine turned me on to this Maritime company and I was able to record the entire album using just one pair of sticks! I even used them on a few gigs before and after the session. Impressive!

I prepared extensively before the session by writing out charts for myself, playing along to demo versions of the songs, and making sure my drums had new heads and were tuned properly. Being prepared is crucial as it helps to make the day go more smoothly and can end up saving the artist a great deal of money in expensive studio time.

Charting out the tunes:

Below is a double shot of the same song entitled ‘Liquid Fear’ recorded about 14 years apart.  The first track is my recording debut at age 16 and the second is an updated version done a couple years ago.  I don’t play much metal these days so the update project proved to be both challenging and incredibly fun.  Incidentally, the guitarist and vocalist on both tracks is none other than my website partner-in-crime and current member of The Muted Pitch, Jason Freake!  The original track was on the album ”Catalyst”.

Lunge was:

Jason Freake – Guitar and Vox
Anthony Hyde – Guitar
Trevor Kohout – Bass
Mike Carroll – Drums

This is a song I recorded with the Hupmans for the 2010 ECMA award winning album ‘Countin’ Quarters’. The drum beat in the verses was inspired by the Dire Straits track ‘Water of Love’. Recorded in Wolfville, NS.
